Cuban Missile Crisis occurs.

October 24, 1962

Soviet ships bound for Cuba are turned back by a blockade of U.S. warships. Two days earlier, President John F. Kennedy revealed in a nationally televised address that spy plane photos revealed the construction of Soviet missile bases in Cuba. The crisis passes and the blockade is lifted after Soviet prime minister Nikita Khrushchev orders the missiles removed on October 28, 1961.
